I imagine that in a scenario where most files are small (0.1-10mb) you can probably survive multiple months before you run into a problem. We've tried that and unfortunately it is not the issue. To date all the answers to this issue I find relate to "letting dropbox finish its caching". This means that hard disk space is being filled up completely multiple times a day on many of our machines (we're a small office). Dropbox has a nasty habit of saving older version of these files every couple of minutes, which means a new 400mb file every couple of minutes when someone is working on them and saving regularly.
We work with a lot of largeish size files (powerpoint and keynote presentations on mac), which run at ~150-400mb each.
